X4 Foundations Poll #2: What did you like?

Post by Bernd » Sat, 22. Dec 18, 22:33

Which areas of the game did you enjoy in particular? Note that there is another topic where we ask the opposite question of what you did NOT enjoy!
This does of course leave you the option to select any area in neither of these two postings if it is not clearly the one or the other:

I voted for missions, and both small, large combat. Not because I dislike missions and combat. But because that's what I like the most in X games and in X4 both are extremely lacking and shallow

EDIT: Wait I thought this was the not like poll because the title is weird D:

only remote trading mining and exploring data vaults wrecks.. I like from THAT list..

everything else is watered down or missing compared with X3.
Too many bugs to also answer justly without saying "this sucked because bug.. " or " not implemented well" which is 90% of functions atm

Yeah, I done the same thing, dislike the lack of depth to the plot/missions, the lore and story really made the X series for me and X4 has been a fairly big let down in that regard, the lack of plot and lack of even basic item descriptions really makes the game feel incomplete.

I havent got to such an advanced stage where I have experienced all of them, but being a long time fan of the X series I know I will enjoy every single one of those aspects .. So have ticked the lot.

I cant at such an early stage of the game honestly say that I have actually enjoyed all of them, its too early really for this poll, so I should imagine a lot of this (if everyone is choosing honestly and based on what they have actually experienced) will screw up the poll .. They may at a later date experience say roll playing a Miner, and thoroughly enjoy something they have not tried before, but can not at this stage answer "yes I enjoyed that" because they have not been there yet or maybe cant even afford a ship that size to start mining.

For example how many people will have a fleet to go marauding around Xenon sectors only 22 days after the game was launched ?

I should imagine, if all answers are honest, not many people will put a tick in that box, but in a year or so when we have got past restarting the game due to game bugs still being fixed and we want to experience a completely bug free game .. Then we might have had chance to get to such advanced personal economic and power expansion to be able to decide.

Edit : Ooh one feature I love but is not mentioned (I guess because its just part of the whole UI experience) .. "Fly To..", select one of your ships, right click the map and choose "Fly to.." .. THEN DO IT AGAIN AS MANY TIMES AS YOU NEED TO CLEAR THE FOG OF WAR IN A SECTOR, EVEN DO IT IN ANOTHER SECTOR AFTERWARDS! .. :) I set a ship on to following a great many waypoints set in this way last night and cleared the fog in every sector I have discovered by making a spiders web of waypoints in every sector, and the ship used gates and highways along the way to link the waypoint between last and next sectors = BRILLIANT :D

(Although .. I did see the ship going through the walls / structure of some stations that got in its way sometimes, which is a major immersion fail)

Only mining I did was some crystals for 10-20 minutes for startup cash 1 2 saves, 2 other saves I just explored Argon/HOP space while they were bashing eachother and came back to collect my startup money lol
Remote mining/trading as in automine and autotrade.
Building stations is fine (see my answer in P1) but there is definitely some missed oppertinunities viewtopic.php?f=146&t=410122
Exploration meh, the scanning range is so limited and nothing much out there that I just used the long range scanning mod, that returned the same as mk2 only in 1 time without flying around.
Discoverd 2-3 data vaults and got it in my timeline, but the first time I came across these untargettable things I had no idea what they were and just moved on. << Definitely will hunt them down when my stations are built :)
Capturing nope.
Fleet command is horrible with ships doing what ever they want so didn't bother after a test: https://steamcommunity.com/app/392160/d ... 811532927/ and I know a new fleet command is coming with 2.0 ;)

Only wrote 2 reviews so far, but it feels there is just too much content missing and the only thing appealing for the game is actually the station building and economy with some blowing up stuff in between but nothing for the combat type of players that will need to do some hefty trading and economics instead of doing simple to fleet combat missions to earn money.
Can see that type of player getting bored fast at the moment.

I will hold my 1 time review oppertunity for after 2.0 and the dlc's as otherwise anything I write will sound like being a "fanboy" for people who have no patience, can't see the groundwork of a great game and don't have the patience to watch the map for hours to see what is breaking to fix and repeat :D
Will definitely write one after 2.0 and the dlc's!

216 hours since I last closed the game and loving it, EXCEPT the trader (will repeat it every single time I get a chance lol) viewtopic.php?f=146&t=410096&p=4809516#p4809389

I love the new remote trading. I'm a big MORTer so I love being able to queue up a series of trades for each of my ships and know the prices are locked in and I don't have to worry about them for awhile.

I also really love the new station building mechanics (but please let us rotate production modules around other axis. At least upside down).

I also love the idea of the crew/pilot system. We just need better QoL mehanics for managing and moving them around between ships.

I haven't tried everything yet.
Every time I explode or there's a version upgrade I restart

Most of this list is a 'partial' done that from my perspective
Stuff I ticked is 'liked' so far.

I ticked station building. That part of X4 is nice, still I prefered the unique type of stations of X3 vs the mega stations of x4. I would have loved something in between (customisable stations but limited to a single production line?). Still, this is my fav part of the game.

Mining is alright, and auto-mine does its job nicely but its not an outstanding part of the game but I would put it in the positive side.

Trading is lacking. I bought a M size trader and after having told it to auto-trade all the wares, I see it roaming about with its cargo mostly empty, making dimes here and there. (I have put satellites in many places, not all of them but I cover alot of stations). Looking forward to a mod to take this over and make the ultimate trader.

Combat is meh. Have not experienced large scale but so far I have a M size ship (don't know the class but it can land ships on it) and its fun, but the fighter support AI is so-so and the turrets are useless. I let it fight by itself and at some point I quickly had to take over as the ship was starting to get hit bad and was barely using the main guns so with the turrets doing next to no damage, it was kinda useless. When an escort ship was going back to land and suddenly I got attacked by another ship, the AI fighter had to land or else I would have needed to manually start sending orders, not practical if I have many ships.

Not had the chance to try boarding, hacking is unknown. I got whats required to hack but no idea what will happen if I do. I check online for clues and so far I read of bugs galore with that feature so I am not touching it unless I get more info as to what it will do.

Exploration, nope and I usually go the exploration or builder route in games. I tried to follow an asteroid field. I followed it, followed, followed then turned away as I wasn't sure how much I was waisting time. There is potential but the mechanics are not there for me.

So far, I am usually pretty savvy with UI's but this game is the one that required the most use of google to find solutions to what I wanted to do. A good UI is one where it is self explanatory or at worst, with the help of an interactive tutorial. X4 fails miserably on this front. I'll get used to it, thats fine but the process of learning it shows that the design is very flawed. I remember playing supreme commander, this game had very advanced features for an RTS and it was done so well, the tutorial was not needed and maybe a hint here and there to show the unique features but that was it.

One last example of UI issues, unable to give orders to units on the Z axis. If they do implement it, how will it be done? The natural use of this is to use shift like done in many other games. How will egosoft do it, I'll probably need to google it :P

To conclude, one thing that stands out for playing this from release. The bugs and the obvious bugs that sceams 'i have not tested my game' or 'I was pushed to release it in this state' is a big source of points being lost. I know egosoft are known for this, it doesn't make it acceptable in my opinion. I know they will fix it and they are showing us already that they will fix the issues, bravo to that, still it doesn't excuse it. So no good reviews from me I am sorry.

Happy holidays!

Large scale fight (fleets / wars / Attacking a Xenon sector)

I wish this wasn't crap but atm it is

smaller ships just leave the destroyers etc behind and die rather than protect the big ships

all frigates and bombers run out of ammo in about 30 seconds then spend the rest of the fight constantly asking me what they should do about having no ammo

fleet looks so cool going in but when combat starts its like they are all drunk

oh and Turrets suck

and the big ships NEED working flack

For some of those I would have voted if they would work properly.

So I voted for that which I like and works well.

Capturing ships - is pretty good (besides the boarding bug, where you have to get out of visual range for the pod to actually get into the ship).

Building stations - that one actually works very well and is entertaining (of auto traders wouldn't suck so much and tons of commands missing for traders to have them do specific things)

Hacking / stealing / - not so much, even tough I like the mechanics (half the data leaks are inside stations, black market mission are broken - often tell you to deliver something like space caviar, but then they actually require 3x cores or something, you have to bring it right away or else the bar dissappears, can't sell properly to black markets manually, always buggy, also looking for leaks becomes tedious, especially when looking for black markets and you only get mission - this part is unplayable without mods)

Exploration - was nice the first two times but after restaring for testing betas and mods you start to know the map, since the map itself is static. A dynamic map would have been much better for replayability

Small scal fights - are nice but way to easy and feel unfinished and unbalanced (the shield/boost mechanic doesn't wokr for the AI at all, weapon balancing is bad, large ships are pretty much ueseless, turrets not working very well)

Large scale fight - well, I would really love them but with the current bugs and AI behaviour they are not really something worth reviewing on yet.

Would I review the game and give a thumbs up? - Not now, as it needs lots more love and patches and maybe some mechanics changes. I am sure it will get there some day but for now I prefer not to give a review at all.

I liked flying ships and looking for stuff (while I still had stuff to look for), finding more efficient ways to do missions, cruising the superhighway, trying to make asteroids not pop up that jarringly (I mean, this is the render distance for 1080, really?)

My favorite session was to play as betrayed paranid.

The ship spawned outside of the station, so at first I presumed I have to play stowaway. But no one lands on that station.
Checking the map impatiently, I found out I do have a ship to my name and started to search for ways to get to it. I had a fun time trying to clip out of the landing area and to get into space and then somehow hopefully fly to my ship.
Well, I could get to the outer shell of the station, but no matter how I jumped, I couldn't get out. Then I glitched myself through quicksave-quickload into the bowels of the station, had to restart and lo and behold, the ship was on the landing pad.
A bit of a bummer as I imagined flying as a passenger from a station to a station, mixing and matching ingredients and working my way up to a first ship and it didn't work out. But this was the first (and the last, unfortunately) time I appreciated all that work that went into space legs.

I like being able to give my ships orders from the map, being able to set a search pattern by dragging the navigation lines around, and the ability to make a ship trade in a sector with a few clicks. I enjoy the feel of flight, walking around on stations, and being able to stand behind my pilot while he/she flies me everywhere. Some of the random missions are good, though quite simple with a huge payout for the effort involved. Super Highways are great for getting around. I've also had fun with data vaults when I can get them work properly.

To elaborate on Capturing ships: S/M class ships are good and I did enjoy boarding a Capital Ship, but I did not enjoy getting the marines back to my capturing ship. You have to be able to transfer them like wares. Phoning each one of them is ridiculously tedious and I don't know how this ended up in the game.
Thank God I am atheist.

I really do hope that even if hacking gameplay is the most unliked feature, they won't spent a massive amount of time on that instead of fixing the more obvious problems X4 has... that being pathfinding, trader ai, combat ai, ship balancing, faction war and the lack of content to name a few

I didn't vote for hacking or personal trading/mining.

Hacking because I don't know how to do it. If I knew I might enjoy it.

What I like is station building. This is something that I always wanted to do and it huge improvement compared to X3...
Thing that I don't like is lack of genetic missions in X4 and it would be nice if we can get more different types. At the same time it is somewhat repetitive to look for them (flying from station to station). XR style bulletin board would be nice also I would recommend to tie missions to fight/trade reputation like in X3 as for now late in game there is no point doing missions because rewards vs challenge and time spent is not worth it .
It's not world hunger because we can't feed poor,it's because there will never be enough to feed the rich .....

I hate to say it, but I could not really vote yes on any option.. I have reset a few times with each patch so I haven't been able to make a station, yet, and from what I've seen from others I might like that, just haven't done it. Everything else just barely works enough for me to consider it a hurdle and not like a.. fun thing to do. I'm sorry, just, the lack of polish stops me from voting yes to literally any option.

I do generally like the station building, although there are still numerous bugs to squash with it.
There are some issues with the planner itself, like drawing a zillion lines all over the screen to indicate potential snap locations which is more confusing than helping as soon as you go beyond a handful of possible snap locations. Modules not saving loadouts (shields / turrets) and not displaying the correct previously selected upgrades upon editing.
Then there is the actual building itself, which skips turrets / shields at random most of the time and the planner doesn't actually reference the true station design as it was built afterwards either.

The bugs aside though, the core of it, the free placement and unique station designs you can come up with is awesome and it is generally a very enjoyable experience. I would love to have true three dimensional rotation of objects though, rather than being forced to place certain modules on top for example (e.g. Graphene?). Of course keep the snap locations, just make it so I can lay modules flat if I so desire.

X:BtF: 7/10 | X2: 8/10 | X3:R/TC/AP: 8/10 | X:R: 3/10 | X4: 0/10 (3 points for split ships and stations, 4.0 -> -50 points).
If you are raising pirate activity, give me meaningful ways to deal with them PERMANENTLY. Better things to do than replacing ships every 10 minutes, or babysitting ships getting harassed.
Stopped playing X4 with 4.0 due to outrageous, needless and pointless nerfs to everything. Don't change what wasn't broken in the first place.
